Sprint and Verizon seem to have “cheated” their customers into clicking ads for “free” digital content like ring tones and horoscopes – that were offered by 3rd parties and then charging them for it. The charges weren’t obvious to the consumers and went undetected for months on end.
So, one, the consumers were charged and two, their complaints had no redressal. These two telecom companies were basically acting as the payment processing partners for the 3rd parties selling content on the sly. Sprint and Verizon meanwhile collected a cool 30-40% on these charges.
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau had filed orders in federal courts against Sprint and Verizon to pay up provide $120 million in settlement to their wireless customers who were illegally billed hundreds of millions of dollars in unauthorized third-party charges. In what is known as “Illegal Mobile Cramming”, CPFB won the settlement for the consumers.
